Dwarf wrestlers have been part of lucha libre in Mexico since at least the '50s, when they played "mini" versions of famous wrestlers. That tradition continues today, but standalone names have also emerged. Currently, Mexico's two biggest promotions have their own small wrestlers competing for titles.
In the Consejo Mundial de Lucha Libre (CMLL), they're called Micro Luchadores, while in AAA Worldwide they're known as Minis. Although these matches are often seen as bizarre and entertaining, the wrestlers who compete are highly trained and deeply dedicated to their craft. So much so that some "minis," like Mascarita Sagrada, wrestle in other divisions thanks to their popularity and technique.
Mexican lucha libre is going through an exciting moment, where one of the most celebrated rivalries among fans features two micro wrestlers as its protagonists: Kemonito and Kemalito.
Kemonito debuted in 2003 and is one of the most beloved characters in the sport. Wearing Boke's colors (blue and yellow), this 90-centimeter-tall monkey served as manager and friend to the wrestler Atlantis during his early years. Later, Atlantis would turn heel and that ended his partnership with Kemonito, who went on to become CMLL's official mascot. From that point on, the micro wrestler became a brand ambassador and a widely recognized figure. But Kemonito truly became famous after this:
The ultimate Kemonito viral moment
And that's how the meme was born. It went massively viral and CMLL knew exactly how to capitalize on it. Suddenly, Kemonito was a rockstar doing anti-Covid ads, working with major brands like Bimbo, and collaborating several times with Netflix to promote shows. He also premiered a 2023 autobiographical short film called Kemonito, la ultima caida. But none of that does justice to the memetic phenomenon.
The meme that blew everything up was Kemalito, the evil twin of Kemonito. But it came full circle and CMLL took notice. On September 16, 2023, the real Kemalito debuted at CMLL's 90th anniversary, putting the spotlight back on the Micro universe and setting up a rivalry against his nemesis Kemonito.

The audience embraced the new villain wholeheartedly, and it also gave the blue-and-yellow monkey a fresh wave of heroic momentum. Kemalito is not just a manager and ringside companion -- he's also a wrestler who has shown remarkable skill for both wrestling and villainy throughout his run so far.
After several skirmishes, we finally got the first match between these two charismatic micro wrestlers this November. It was very short, ending in a disqualification, but everything is building toward a super match soon.

Kemonito managed to tame the meme, become one himself, and even spawn an alter ego. Today, with nearly 40 years of in-ring experience (because beneath the monkey suit is a 57-year-old man named Jesus Juarez Rosales, who has been wrestling since 1984), this micro wrestler and his archrival are rocking Mexican arenas.
In the meantime, we'll be watching closely to see how this rivalry -- which was undoubtedly the most important in Mexico in 2024 -- plays out.
