A figure that qualifies for Patron Saint is identified by its maxims, or better yet, by its questions. For Bateson, the question was this: what do a crab, a lobster, a daffodil, a madman, a sane person, you, and I have in common? This is something Piscitelli always raises in every space of (de)formation we attend. No one gives a reasonable answer. However, it remains the best question I know to explain why we separate knowledge into compartments that reality never respected.
Intelligence, for Bateson, was not about accumulated information but the ability to detect differences that make a difference. There lies the kinship with Richard Feynman, who insisted that what’s interesting is not memorizing the names of things but understanding how everything works, what makes a system actually function. Bateson shared that almost childlike curiosity, but he took it to an unusual place for his time: instead of accumulating loose observations until a theory emerged, he did the reverse. He first built the theoretical framework, the general question, the structure, and only then did he go down to observe the concrete phenomenon (the Balinese ritual, the otter in the zoo, the family of the schizophrenic patient) to see if the framework held up. It was, at its core, a way of thinking rather than a catalog of findings.
Artificial and natural are, for contemporary science, categories that are becoming increasingly porous, but Bateson already treated them as a suspicious distinction over half a century ago. There is no clear boundary between the mind and its environment, between the organism and the ecosystem that sustains it, he said. The mind does not end at the skull. It extends outward, toward the blind person's cane feeling the sidewalk, toward the axe that cuts the tree, toward the very relationship between the lumberjack, the axe, and the tree. That idea, now echoed by extended cognition and desk ecology, was a philosophical provocation of a different caliber in the seventies.

He wrote little with the thought of being easily read, and that too is part of his intellectual biography. He was the son of William Bateson, the biologist who popularized the word "genetics" and who hoped his son would continue with the measurable, with zoology, far from anything that sounded psychological or unstable. Gregory obeyed partially: he studied biology but ended up migrating toward anthropology, ethnographic film alongside Margaret Mead in Bali and New Guinea, the cybernetics of the Macy conferences, psychiatry, linguistics, systems theory. He never chose a discipline. He chose a question and pursued it across all territories where he found clues.
This drive, to unify rather than fragment, he formulated almost devotionally years later, in 1979:
We have begun to lower ecological ideas, and although we always trivialize them, transforming them into commerce or politics, there is at least an impulse in the heart of humanity to unify and sanctify the natural world of which we are a part.
Text and context are, in Bateson's work, the same thing viewed from two angles. In Naven (1936), his first major book, he already experimented with that perspective: he described a ritual of the Iatmul of New Guinea not as an exotic curiosity but as a feedback system, with its own mechanisms of balance and overflow. What would have given another anthropologist a descriptive chapter gave Bateson a model. The ritual did not "mean" something outside of itself: it was, in its own terms and internal logic, a machine for regulating social tensions. That habit of reading any system (a ritual, a family, an ecosystem) as a feedback machine accompanied him throughout his life.
On that basis, he built the question that best summarizes him, the one that pursues the title of one of his most cited essays: what pattern connects the crab with the lobster, the lobster with the daffodil, the daffodil with the human being, and all of them with the madman and the sane person? Bateson's answer is not a poetic metaphor but a strong epistemological bet: there exists a shared grammar, a formal structure of relationship (not of substance) that runs through all living systems. It doesn’t matter if an organism has an exoskeleton or mirror neurons; what matters is how information is organized within it, how difference circulates, how it corrects itself in the face of change. There lies the pattern that connects, not in chemistry or anatomy.
Bateson was born in Grantchester, England, on May 9, 1904, and died in San Francisco on July 4, 1980, already a naturalized American. In between, he was an anthropologist, philosopher, sociologist, linguist, writer, biologist, ethnographic film director, therapist, semiotician, and, depending on how you look at it, one of the founding fathers of cybernetics alongside Norbert Wiener and John von Neumann at the Macy conferences. The list of professions is not just a curious book cover detail: it is living proof of his own thesis. A man who refused to let his thinking be caged within a university department ended up needing eight different disciplines to basically say one thing.
With that toolkit, he arrived at the notion that names his most influential book, Steps to an Ecology of Mind (1972): the ecology of the mind. The idea, brutally summarized, is that the unit of survival is not the isolated organism or even the species, but the organism plus its environment. To think otherwise (the individual against nature, the mind against the body, culture against biology) is, for Bateson, the epistemological error that explains much of the ecological and political catastrophes of the twentieth century. There is also his most quoted phrase, almost a motto: "The major problems of the world arise from the difference between how nature works and how people think." There is no rift between humanity and nature: there is, at most, a way of thinking that insists on inventing it.

It helps to remember the context to understand why this search also led him to psychiatry. In the mid-fifties, in Palo Alto, Bateson assembled a team with Jay Haley, Donald Jackson, and John Weakland to study communication within families with a member diagnosed as schizophrenic. They were not looking for a chemical failure in the patient's brain but a pattern in the system of messages circulating within that family. There, almost as a lateral finding that ended up being the most famous of his career, the double bind hypothesis emerged.
Of the examples Bateson documented, the most cited occurs in Bali, where he had observed years earlier that some mothers responded to the affectionate gesture of a small child with a sudden and immediate rejection, as soon as the child approached to reciprocate the affection. The child was caught between two contradictory and inescapable orders: "come closer" and "if you come closer, I will punish you for coming closer." He could not name the contradiction, he could not escape the relationship, he could not not respond. That is the double bind: two messages of different logical levels that cancel each other out, within a bond from which one cannot exit or comment from the outside. Bateson proposed it as a hypothesis for schizophrenia, a hypothesis today debated and largely abandoned in its stronger version, but the concept survived the theory that originated it: today it is used to describe institutions, work relationships, even the relationship with the algorithms that demand authentic participation on platforms that reward imposture.

Human and non-human cease to be separable categories when viewed through Bateson's eyes, and that remains the uncomfortable residue left by Steps to an Ecology of Mind half a century later: there is no outside from which to repair the relationship with nature, because there has never been an inside separate from it. Every attempt to heal that relationship through management, discourse, or a promise of sustainability unwittingly repeats the same gesture that Bateson diagnosed: treating the symptom as if it were external to the system that produces it.
The pattern that connects is not an archival curiosity or a metaphor to enliven a talk; it is the only honest way to never stop correcting the imbalance.
